History:         The genesis of the 5000 GT road car was the availability of approximately 32 left over engines from Maserati’s hugely successful 450S racing program. Anxious to use up the supply, Maserati searched for an initial buyer with the resources and prestige to make the effort worthwhile. The Shah of Persia initiated the extremely limited production run and acted as the catalyst for others such as Briggs Cunningham, the Aga Khan, Sig.Innocenti, Sig. Agnelli and King Saud, among others. The 5000 GT essentially used a strengthened version of the 3500 GT chassis, The cars came with many luxury features for the day: disc brakes at all 4 wheels and electric windows as well as air conditioning and record players upon request. Custom bodies came from a variety of Italian coachbuilders.  While Allemano was the official factory coachbuilder for this model and accounted for two thirds (2/3) of all production, other coachbuilders were Touring, Ghia, Pininfarina, Monterosa, Michelotti, Frua and Bertone. In 1960, halfway through production, disc brakes were added to all 4 wheels and a ZF5 speed gearbox was introduced with this car, AM 103.038.

Production:   A total of 33 cars were built: Allemano 22, Frua 3 (incl. 1 with 4.7 liter motor), Ghia 1, Michelotti 1, Monterosa 2, Pininfarina 1, Touring 2 and Bertone 1 (4.7 motor)
