Background: The Porsche 930 Turbo grew out of the Group 4/5 racing programs where Porsche 934 & 935 racers enjoyed great success. The original purpose of the 911/930 Turbo was to gain homologation for the 1975 & 1976 racing seasons. The 930 Turbo was produced from 1975 through 1989, with various upgrades over the life of the program. The very first cars had narrow bodies with a “whale tail” rear spoiler. Wider bodies soon emerged and in 1978 were followed by a displacement increase to 3300 cc, and an inter-cooler was added to further boost horsepower. At the same time the suspension was upgraded with new anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers and larger diameter torsion bars. The single biggest upgrade was in 1989, the last year of 14 years of 930 production, when the long-requested adoption of the heavy duty 5 speed Getrag transmission, became a single year reality.
Production: Although a total of 18,770 Porsche 930’s were produced over the 14 year production period (2524 in 1989), only 1945 Turbo 5 speeds were imported in 1989. Of these, 147 were Option 505 Slant Noses, and of these, just 34 were coupes. This particular car is a one owner California car and is equipped with many “Special Wishes” options, especially the exceedingly rare center console with 3 additional gauges.
