History/Production: These curious looking miniature motorcycles were first seen in 1961 putting around Honda’s Tama Tech Park and at the Honda Suzuka circuit. That motorcycle became known as the Honda “Monkey” with the official designation, Z50M. This model was popular because with fold-down handlebars it could be easily stowed on a car, truck, motorhome or boat. Honda began exporting mini bikes in 1969 but gave them a different designation: “Mini Trail” Z50A (aka as KO model). These KO models could be purchased with or without lights, the latter being the off road version with the QA50 designation.
This particular motorcycle has been fitted with a Rickman body kit designed for the Honda Mini Trail comprising: fuel tank, fenders, café racer tail section and side covers. The bike is an approximate mini replica of the famous Steve McQueen Rickman Triumph’s right down to the iconic McQueen green paint and custom Rickman/Avon decals. Additionally, all metal parts are nickel plated: frame, forks, exhaust pipes heat shield, primary cover, engine case, swing-arm, pedals and stand.
It is believed that at least 450,000+ of the “Monkey”/ Z50 (in its numerous iterations) have been produced over the last 50 years.
