History/Production: Designed by legendary designer and Bimota founder, Massimo Tamburini, the 916 is one of the most influential machines of the last 20 years and the 916 SPS is the ultimate version of this landmark motorcycle. The SPS was not actually a 916cc machine at all but rather an entirely new 996cc unit built to homologate an engine for Superbike competition. Along with the new 996cc displacement, there were new reinforced crankcases, new heads with larger combustion chambers and bigger valves, increased compression ratio, lighter crankshaft, new camshafts and new fuel injector setup and a P8 ECU. Seven individual carbon fiber body pieces also comprised the SPS exterior package. SPS horsepower was up to 134hp from the original 114.
1208 916 Strada’s/Biposto’s were built 1994-1997 including approximately 120 of the interim 916 SP performance model in 1996. There were also 54 examples of the full racing, 916 SPA built. The final version, the 916 SPS, had a production run of 404.
