Production/History: The original Car Craft (& Kart) go kart was designed and built in 1961 by Bob D’Olivo with considerable input from editor Dick Day. Dean Jeffries did the candy apple red paintwork and Tony Nancy did the “tuck ‘n roll” upholstery. A modified McCulloch MC 20 engine was used in conjunction with a dual carb Bertelsen intake manifold. Hand’s magnesium 5 inch “Spyder“ wheels were used with 10” slicks (front & rear) and an Azusa steering wheel installed. This car, so described, was featured in the May 1962 edition of Car & Craft magazine.
Inspired by 1962 Car Craft article, in 2008 Phil Riley decided to undertake the construction of an approximate replica. While the frame is dimensionally an exact replica, running gear is upgraded with the following: Robron front axle, spindles and pedals. Azusa steering wheel, steering shaft and rear axle. Enginetics single disk brake, McCulloch mild tune MC 91 fitted with Tillotson carburetor, Futora Engineering clutch and Dyna-Drive automatic transmission. Unlike the original car this replica has different sized wheels front and rear: front 5” and rear 6”. Riley used Azusa rear rims but machined his own smaller front rims along with custom “Moon” style wheel covers for all 4 wheels.
