History: Trevor Wilkinson founded TVR in 1949. By deleting
the letters R, E and O from his first name, he came up with
the title TVR Engineering. The TVR formula consisted of a
tubular frame with fully independent suspension and a fiberglass
fastback body. Over the years a wide variety of engines have
been used including, Cooper Climax, MGA, MGB, Triumph and
English Ford in-line 4s and V6s and American V8s.
In the USA, TVR is best known for its early V8 cars, the Griffith
200 and 400 models. The basic Taimar was powered by a Ford
Essex V6 and was the first TVR to have a full opening rear
hatch. Very few (30) Taimars were built with a Broadspeed
Turbocharger. This unit added 100 bhp and produced incredible
acceleration for the time with a documented 0-60 mph time
of 5.8 seconds. This particular car was the New York show
car and is the only left-hand drive Taimar Turbo in the USA.
Kept in impounded storage for nearly 20 years, the mileage
is just 1783 from new.
Production: A total of 395 Taimars were built
over the 4 year, 1976 to 1979 period. Of this number, 30 were
turbocharged models. Of these 30 cars, only 3 were left hand
drive.
